Wuhan: China PR defender Feng Xiaoting is hoping Thursday’s 1-0 win over Uzbekistan can lead to a “miracle” in the final 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier on September 5 against Qatar.
The Chinese need to beat the West Asians in Doha and hope that both Uzbekistan and Syria fail to win against Korea Republic and Islamic Republic of Iran respectively, as well as overcoming a significant goal difference inferiority, to clinch third place in Group A and with it the play-off place for Russia 2018.
China’s one and only World Cup finals appearance so far came in the 2002 edition, co-hosted by Japan and Korea Republic.
“We have been fighting so hard for the 2018 FIFA World Cup since last year,” said Guangzhou Evergrande centre-back Feng.
“Now there is only one match to go, all of us are hoping to make a miracle happen.”
