Kuala Lumpur: The overall attendance figure for this season’s AFC Champions League surged passed the 1.5 million mark on Wednesday.
In total, some 1,614,149 supporters have now witnessed the 113 Play-off and Group Stage games – with 1,448,869 fans attending the highs and lows of the Group Stage, a new competition record.
Iran giants Persepolis once again topped the attendance table, with 100,000 spectators attending Wednesday’s 2-1 Group A win over Bunyodkor at the Azadi Stadium in Tehran.
Persepolis’ encounter with Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr on April 8 also attracted the same number of fans.
The 2013 edition of Asia’s premier club competition holds the current attendance record for the competition as a whole, with 2,021,025 – a number that looks set to be broken come this season’s final in November.
