Doha: Danish coach Michael Laudrup has given his farewell message to Qatari club Lekhwiya and expressed his confidence that the AFC Champions League 2015 quarter-finalists have a bright future ahead.
The 50-year-old former Barcelona and Real Madrid star, who signed up with the club before the start of the last season in August, helped Lekhwiya win the Qatars Stare League (QSL) for the fourth time in five seasons at the end of April before clinching the Qatar Cup in early May.
“It was an honour for me and my staff to be part of Lekhwiya’s greatest season after we won the league title and Qatar Cup following exciting matches and everyone did a great performance,” Laudrup was quoted as saying on the club’s website.
“Reaching the quarter-finals of the AFC Champions League was a special end to the season and I thank the players for their responsibility and their ability to overcome difficulties.
“I thank everyone in Lekhwiya club after the cooperation I found and I urge everyone in the club to continue their hard work which made them one of the strongest teams in Asia.
“I am sure this team has a bright future.”
After Laudrup’s departure, the club signed up Algerian Djamel Belmadi, who led the side to win the QSL titles in 2010 and 2011.
Lehkwiya are set to face last year’s runners-up Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia when the AFC Champions League resumes with the first leg of the quarter-finals on August 25.
