Kuala Lumpur: Guangzhou Evergrande captain Zheng Zhi has been named the Toyota Player of the Week for the first legs of the AFC Champions League semi-finals after scoring the winning goal as the Chinese Super League champions edged out Japan’s Gamba Osaka 2-1 on Wednesday.
Zheng, who lifted the trophy when Guangzhou won the 2013 continental title, headed home three minutes before the hour mark to add to Huang Bowen’s eye-catching first half strike as Luiz Felipe Scolari’s side completed a determined comeback after a Feng Xiaoting own goal had handed Gamba an early lead in front of a 48,946 crowd at Tianhe Sport Centre Stadium.
China international Zheng also completed 70 of 79 attempted passes, while winning five duels, to attract a rating of 7.6 as Guangzhou claimed a narrow advantage ahead of the return fixture in Japan on October 21.
