Manama: Unbeaten Bahrain extended their lead at the top of 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualifying Group E to three points with a 5-0 win over Chinese Taipei on Tuesday.

A deflected shot from Komail Al Aswad and a strike from Ali Madan handed the home side a comfortable lead at half-time at Bahrain National Stadium.

And with a double from Mahdi Abduljabbar and a further strike from Abdulla Yusuf sealing the win in the second half, 2004 AFC Asian Cup semi-finalists Bahrain edged closer to a fifth consecutive Finals appearance after second-placed Turkmenistan earlier drew 1-1 in Singapore.

Bahrain were rewarded for a fast start as Al Aswad’s shot from outside of the penalty area took a crucial deflection to find a way past Chinese Taipei goalkeeper Chiu Yu-hung after just 10 minutes.

And the home side continued to dominate as Jamal Rashed twice went close for Bahrain midway through the first half, although goalkeeper Chiu was not called into action.

Chiu did need to be on his toes five minutes before the hour mark, though, to deny Al Aswad a second from outside of the area.

But Chiu was beaten in the third minute of stoppage time at the end of the first half as Madan found a way past the goalkeeper after being picked out inside the area.

Bahrain maintained the pressure at the start of the second half and added a third through Abduljabbar as the striker moved into the area before firing past Chiu.

The home side eased off as the half progressed with a three-goal lead to their name, although Bahrain still added a fourth with 15 minutes remaining as substitute Yusuf directed Hesham Nayem’s cross into net with a well-executed bicycle kick.

And the home side sealed the win in the last minute to add to their earlier draw with Singapore and win over Turkmenistan as Abduljabbar tapped home his second of the night from close range from Ismaeel Abdulatif’s neat pass.
