Needing all three points to keep their faint AFC Champions League hopes alive, the Sky Blues took the lead against the run of play midway through the first half when a delightful ball from Mierzejewski caught the Suwon defence napping, allowing Milos Ninkovic to ghost in and chip the ball in past a stranded Shin Hwa-yong. The visitors’ lead lasted barely 60 seconds, however, with Dejan Damjanovic firing the home side level with his fourth goal of the group stage and third against Sydney FC this year. Another defensive lapse allowed Sydney FC to retake the lead just after the half hour mark when Alex Brosque was left free at the near post, heading home from Mierzejewski’s pin-point free kick to give Sydney FC a 2-1 lead at the break.
