Matchday Six - Group E: Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors clinch top spot
Jeonju: Three second-half goals helped Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors to a comfortable 3-0 win over Kitchee SC in their final match in Group E of the 2018 AFC Champions League on Wednesday.
Jeonbuk aimed to end the group stage with a win and it was they who had the best of the chances in the first half, with Adriano coming closest with a header that went just wide midway through the half.
The Brazilian thought he had opened the scoring on the hour mark, again with a header, only to be denied by a wonderful save from Wang Zhenpeng.
The home side’s pressure and dominance eventually was rewarded 20 minutes from time when Ricardo Lopes floated in a cross from the left, with Kim Shin-wook beating the offside trap to head the ball back across goal to an unmarked Lee Seung-gi, who made no mistake with just the keeper to beat.
The three points were assured just over five minutes later when Seung-gi, having seen his effort rebound off the post, recovered quickly to lay the ball off to Lim Seon-yeong, whose first-time effort from the edge of the area was glanced home by towering striker Kim.
Kim and Lim then combined again for the goal of the night just before full time. Kim received the ball from Lee Jae-sung on the edge of the area before playing an exquisite back heel pass into the path of Lim, who curled a left-footed effort past Wang Zhenpeng.
The loss consigned Kitchee to bottom spot in Group E with just three points, while Jeonbuk, who won five of their six matches to finish top, can now look forward to a Round of 16 clash with Thai champions Buriram United.
