Group C: Malkiya Club 0-0 Al Ahed FC

Tuesday, March 12, 2019

Manama: Bahrain’s Malkiya Club and Lebanon’s Al Ahed SC played out a 0-0 draw at Khalifa Sports City Stadium on Matchday Two of the 2019 AFC Cup Group C on Tuesday.

Malkiya had come away from Oman with the three points on Matchday One, defeating Al Suwaiq 2-1. Meanwhile, Al Ahed’s first match saw them share the spoils with Qadsia SC in Beirut.

Bulgarian forward Martin Toshev worked hard throughout but could not find his scoring boots, missing chance after chance for Al Ahed.

It was Mohammed Haidar who came closest for the Lebanese side in the first half. The forward outpaced his marker to get on the end of Samir Ayass’ through pass, but goalkeeper Yusuf Hasan closed the angle and smothered the shot.

Ayass then came close, but he chose power over placement and sent his shot from a narrow angle just over the crossbar as Al Ahed failed to make their dominance count and settled for a draw at half time.

Ahmad Zreik was left puzzled as to how he missed after the Al Ahed forward was presented with a golden chance at the hour mark.

Mohamed Kadouh had advanced down the right flank and drilled the ball across the mouth of the goal for Zreik who was well positioned at the far post, but somehow managed to miss the target from four yards.

Hashim Isa thought he had stolen the three points for the Bahraini side late into the match, but the forward watched his 87th minute header hit the upright on its way behind for a goal-kick.

It was Malkiya’s biggest, and last, chance of the match as the final whistle signalled that both teams took home a point.

Al Ahed will chase their first victory when they host Al Suwaiq on April 1, while Malkiya will look to extend their unbeaten record as they travel to Kuwait to face Qadsia in their Matchday Three fixture.
