Hanoi FC (VIE) vs Tampines Rovers FC (SIN) - AFC Cup 2019

Hanoi: Vietnam's Hanoi FC secured their place in the next round of the 2019 AFC Cup on Wednesday with a 2-0 win over 10-man Tampines Rovers that earned them top spot in Group F by virtue of a superior head-to-head record over the Singaporean side.

Both sides finished level on 13 points from their six group games but Wednesday’s win – coupled with the 1-1 draw between the teams on Matchday Two – means Hanoi take first place in the group and advance to the ASEAN Zonal Semi-finals.

First half goals from Ganiyu Oseni and Nguyen Thanh Chung put Hanoi in an unassailable position and Yasir Hanapi’s sending off late in the opening 45 minutes left Tampines – who only needed a draw to win the group – with an impossible task.

Hanoi made their intentions known early in the game, with Oseni pulling his shot across goal with just five minutes on the clock after stumbling past the Tampines defence.

But just five minutes later Oseni was giving the home side a vital advantage when he was on hand to finish a move that started when Tran Van Kien curled his cross into the area, Pape Omar Faye headed to Pham Duc Huy and his downward header was poked home by the Nigerian striker.

A minute after the half hour mark Hanoi FC had doubled their advantage as they exposed Tampines’ weakness in the air again as Nguyen Thanh Chung’s angled header flew beyond Syazwan Buhari following Duc Huy’s pinpoint corner.

Tampines Rovers had threatened little in the opening half, with only Zehrudin Mehmedovic’s long-range free-kick attempt going anywhere close to the target, and matters were to go from bad to worse for the Singaporeans in the first half injury time.

Yasir Hanapi’s needless bundling over of Tran Dinh Trong in an off the ball incident was enough to earn the midfielder a second caution from referee Ali Shaban and reduce Tampines to 10 men for the second 45 minutes. A difficult task now became insurmountable.

The visitors offered little threat in the second half, and it was Hanoi who should have added to the scoreline.

Vietnam international midfielder Nguyen Quang Hai sent his drive from the edge of the area just millimetres over the bar before finding himself closer to goal in the 68th minute, only to stroke the ball harmlessly into the hands of goalkeeper Buhari.

It mattered little, however, as Hanoi had already done enough to take all three points and secure their spot in the next round.
