Group H: PSM Makassar 7-3 Lao Toyota FC

Wednesday, March 13, 2019

Cibinong: A pair of braces from Wiljan Pluim and Eero Markkanen ensured Indonesia’s PSM Makassar scored their first win of this year’s AFC Cup with a thumping 7-3 win over Lao Toyota at the Pakansari Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

The home side made the perfect start to proceedings in their Group H encounter when Wiljan Pluim opened the scoring in just the 12th minute with a strong finish from just inside the area.

But no sooner had the celebrations in the stands died down than the visitors drew level. Kazuo Homma got on the end of a floated ball into the box and after getting the better of his two markers, fired off a shot that looped over Rivki Mokodompit thanks to a deflection from Aaron Evans.

Darije Kalezic’s side restored their lead on 21 minutes when a slick passing move between Zulham Zamrun and Eero Markkanen saw Zulham find space in the penalty area to fire off a powerful shot into the top corner.

Markkanen was then guilty of spurning a number of chances to extend the lead before half time, denied by the woodwork, while two other efforts went wide of the mark.

To continue with the theme of missed opportunities, the home side then missed a penalty on the stroke of half time as Marc Klok saw his effort saved by the feet of Outthilath Nammakhoth before Evans blazed the rebound high and wide.

The home side finally got the third goal their domination deserved just before the hour mark when Zulham turned provider, putting in a cross from the left that found Pluim free in the box, with the midfielder cutting in and firing home with his left foot.

Two minutes later they made it 4-1 as Markkanen finally got the goal his efforts deserved, heading home a cross from Taufik Hidayat as the home side really started to make the most of their domination.

Markkanen secured his brace 10 minutes later when Bayu Gatra got his second assist of the night, sliding the ball into the box for Markkanen who made no mistake with just the keeper to beat.

Only two minutes after coming on as a substitute, Ferdinand Sinaga got his side’s sixth of the game, before Klok scored the goal of the match with a sumptuous left footed volley from outside the area to round out the scoring for the home side.

Lao Toyota looked to get some late consolation when Rafinha scored with a beautiful curling effort from the edge of the area with 15 minutes remaining, and Homma secured his brace in the 90th minute, but it was too little too late.

Buoyed by the big win PSM Makassar next face Kaya FC at home on Matchday Three, while Lao Toyota are on the road again as they face Singapore’s Home United.
