Matchday One - Group F: Shan United 0-1 Home United
Yangon: Singapore’s Home United secured a confidence-boosting 1-0 win away from home over Myanmar champions Shan United on Tuesday to start their 2018 AFC Cup Group F campaign on the brightest possible note.
It was the home side who enjoyed the best of the play in the first half at the Thuwanna Youth Training Centre Stadium, but the visitors, also known as The Protectors, stood tall to protect their goal, allowing them to go to the half time break with the score still level.
Shan United’s Nigerian striker Christopher Chizoba should have opened the scoring early in the second half, but saw his shot well saved by Rudy Khairullah.
Soe Myat Min’s men continued to pepper the goals as the second half wore on, with Home United defending resolutely to block and repel attack after attack, before striking with just 15 minutes remaining.
Against the run of play, Aidil Sharin’s men were able to win the ball back in midfield and break with purpose, working the ball out to Faritz Abdul Hameed on the right flank who whipped in a perfect cross for Korean Song Ui-young, who bundled the ball home at the second attempt.
Patrick Asare missed a gilt-edged chance to equalise late in the match ensuring it was the visitors who left with three points.
