Saif SC seal first AFC Cup appearance
Dhaka: Bangladesh's Saif SC secured a spot in the AFC Cup 2018 Preliminary Stage after beating 2-1 Sheikh Russel at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Tuesday.
Sheikh Russel’s Arup Kumar Baidya gifted Saif SC an early lead when he failed to clear a cross from Jewal Rana, resulting in an own goal in the second minute.
Three minutes into the second half, the roles were then reversed, Ariful Islam registering an own goal after trying to clear a goal-bound header from Sheikh Russel’s Migias Bidari.
Mohamed Ibrahim regained the lead for Saif SC in the 65th minute with a superb finish after receiving a lobbed pass from Matin Mia.
With only two matches left in the Bangladesh Football Federation’s Premier League 2017/18 season, the win puts Saif SC on 38 points after 20 matches, placing them nine points ahead of Dhaka Mohammedan SC Limited.
Saif SC will make their first appearance in the AFC Cup when they face Maldives’ TC Sports Club in the first leg of the South Zone Preliminary Stage on January 23. The return leg will be played seven days later.
