Indonesia advance, heartbreak for Malaysia

Indonesia-Cambodia 1 - AFF U22 2019

Phnom Penh: Indonesia clinched second spot in Group B to advance into the 2019 AFF U22 Cup semi-finals following their 2-0 win over hosts Cambodia while Malaysia missed out despite edging Myanmar 1-0 at the National Olympic Stadium on Friday.

Indonesia picked up their first win of the tournament to finish a point behind Cambodia, who took top spot with six. Malaysia ended their campaign in third place while Myanmar finished last in Group B with a point.

In the semi-finals, Indonesia will play Group A winners Vietnam on Sunday, while Cambodia face Thailand.

Indonesia 2-0 Cambodia

Indonesia started strongly against a Cambodian side not only assured of a place in the final four but who had also won the group following their victories over Malaysia and Myanmar previously.

And Indonesia did not seem to be playing under pressure as they took full control of the flanks and were ahead in the 20th minute following a cross from the right off Witan Sulaeman which gave the chance for Marinus Wanewar to score from close range.

With five changes to the side that overwhelmed Myanmar in their previous game, Cambodia lacked their usual drive and tenacity as the score remained the same for much of the second half.

However, seven minutes to the end, Wanewar sealed the win for Indonesia as he evaded his markers to make good on the cross from Osvaldo Haay.

“We are improving from game to game. But the performance is still not the maximum I expect. They did well against Myanmar and improved against Malaysia. And today, they did very well against Cambodia," said Indonesian head coach Indra Sjafri.

Malaysia 1-0 Myanmar

The Malaysians put up a better show than what they had done in their first two matches as strikers Muhammad Jafri Chew and Muhammad Hadi Fayyad Abdul Razak made their presence felt.

Had it not been for the lack of support, Myanmar could have found the back of the net where instead, it was the Young Tigers who finally went ahead in the close encounter with Muhammad Hadi scoring from close range following a cross from the left just before the break.

Myanmar's Naing Tun tried in vain but could not change the scoreline as Malaysia held on for the win.

"The players gave everything we’ve got and we deserved to win today. It was just disappointing that in spite of the win, we failed to make the semi-finals," said Muhammad Hadi.
