Who is Yoshimi Yamashita?

Yamashita began officiating in 2016 and has been making great strides after picking up the whistle. The Japanese, alongside compatriots Makoto Bozono and Naomi Teshirogi, created AFC Cup history on May 14 by becoming the first all-female trio to officiate a match at the tournament.

Has she officiated at the FIFA World Cup before?

Yamashita will be making her first appearance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. She had stints in the 2016 and 2018 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup and 2018 AFC Women's Asian Cup.

What does she have to say about her appointment?

“Yes, I’m very proud that I’m selected as a referee for my first ever FIFA Women’s World Cup. When I first heard the news, I was obviously very happy and appreciate everyone who supported and had faith in me."

How does she prepare for major tournaments like the World Cup?

“The preparations have not been easy because you have to train and prepare yourself physically and mentally.

“I want to do my best in every match and it is very nice to see so many referees from the AFC being selected.

“We are always supporting each other and I believe we can do our best when we work together."
