Day urges Bangladesh to emulate Abahani

Tuesday, September 3, 2019

Dhaka: Head coach Jamie Day has called on Bangladesh to draw inspiration from Abahani Dhaka Limited as they prepare to kick off their Asian Qualifiers campaign for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar and AFC Asian Cup China 2023.

Bangladesh are in a challenging Group E with reigning AFC Asian Cup champions Qatar, Oman, India and Afghanistan, who they open their campaign against on September 10, and Day wants the South Asians to rise to the challenge.

“We are the lowest ranked team in Group E. It's important for us to give a good account of ourselves and show the world how far we have come in the last 12 months.

"We hope to get some positive results and win some games as well. We are a young squad and the experience will be good for the players in the future,” said Day in an exclusive interview with the-AFC.com.

The Englishman said he isn't setting setting unrealistic targets.

"It's a target we have in mind but we also realise that qualifying for the next round of the Asian Qualifiers is going to be difficult. But we will try to see how we perform in the group stage."

Asian Qualifiers: Bangladesh v Laos

Day said Bangladesh must draw inspiration from Abahani's run to the 2019 AFC Cup Inter-Zone Semi-final, with the six-time Bangaldesh Premier League champions being shown the exit by DPR Korea's 4.25 SC after a brave effort.

“I’m really pleased that Dhaka have done so well this year. It's good that the club has 7-8 players playing for the national team. I hope the club's success will push the other teams to do well.”

Bangladesh advanced to the second round round after seeing off Laos in the first round of the Asian Qualifiers in June.
