Colombo: DPR Korea scored their second successive Asian Qualifiers win, edging Sri Lanka 1-0 in their bid to qualify for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 on Tuesday.

DPR Korea came into the tie having beaten Lebanon 2-0 on Matchday One while Sri Lanka had suffered a 2-0 defeat to Turkmenistan.

The teams, however, were even in the opening minutes with DPR Korea just shading possession but finding it difficult to break through the Sri Lankan defensive wall.

The East Asians had a couple of good chances but quick defending by Sri Lanka saw both teams going into the break without a goal for either side.

DPR Korea continued to dictate terms in the second half and as the pressure mounted, Sri Lanka began to look ragged.

Sensing their opportunity, DPR Korea increased their aggression and Jang Kuk-chol gave them a deserved lead in the 67th minute.

The goal seemed to deflate Sri Lanka as they were unable to mount a comeback and DPR Korea surged to the top of Group H with a perfect six points.

Sri Lanka will face Korea Republic away on October 10 before the East Asians travel to Pyongyang to face DPR Korea five days later.
