Kuala Lumpur: There were no winners in Group C of the Asian Qualifiers on Matchday One as both ties ended in draws and Asia's top ranked side Islamic Republic of Iran will be determined to avoid the same fate on Tuesday.

Iran open their campaign against Hong Kong while Cambodia will entertain Bahrain on Matchday Two of the Asian Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023.

Cambodia had to come from behind to salvage a point against Hong Kong at the Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh on Matchday One and the Southeast Asians will be hoping to do better against Bahrain.

They dominated against Hong Kong but failed to make their chances count and head coach Felix G. Dalmas will remind his players they can't afford to be as wasteful against a Bahrain side who won the 2019 WAFF Championship.

While Cambodia had to come from behind to salvage a point, Bahrain saw a win elude them with Iraq scoring the equaliser five minutes from the end after Komail Hasan Al Aswad had given them a ninth minute lead.

The West Asians can't afford to let points slip away, especially in a group which offers so many challenges, and head coach Helio Sousa will have drummed into his players on the need for full focus till the final whistle.

HONG KONG vs IR IRAN

Having escaped with a point against Cambodia, Hong Kong couldn't have asked for more tougher opponents than Iran in their second match.

Head coach Mixu Paatelainen admitted he wasn't satisfied with his team's performance against Cambodia and expects a response against Iran.

It won't be easy but Paatelainen said Hong Kong's resilience when they came under tremendous pressure from Cambodia was a positive sign.

“I’m not satisfied with the result. We came here to take full points. Nevertheless I’m happy with the way our players fought," said the former Finland international.

Iran, with head coach Marc Wilmots taking charge of his first competitive match, will be the favourites as the Central Asians have been told to make a fast start to the Asian Qualifiers.

"“We are going to have a strong start in the competition. We will impose our style of play. Team Melli will play attacking football," Wilmots said to Iranian media.
