Overseas-based stars power Palestine squad

West Bank: Palestine will be powered by their foreign-based stars for their FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 Asian Qualifiers campaign.


Head coach Noureddin Ould Ali has called up 28 players for his preliminary squad including Yaser Hamed Mayor of Spanish club Club Portugalete, Nazmi Albadawi - who is on loan at North Carolina FC from MLS franchise FC Cincinnati and Tamer Seyam of Moroccan club Hassania Agadir.

Also called up are Islam Batran of Jordan’s Al Jazeera Club, Mahmoud Wadi of Egypt’s Al Masry SC, Saleh Chihadeh of Swiss Super League outfit FC Thun and Oday Dabbagh of Kuwait’s Al Salmiya.

Ould Ali has also included the uncapped Naim Abu Aker, Ahmed Qatmish, Ahmed Zreiqi, Waleed Qombor and Ahmed Al Zuraiqi in the preliminary squad.

Palestine have shown tremendous promise the past month after securing wins over Yemen and Syria in the West Asian Football Federation (WAFF) Championship earlier this month, just missing out on a place in the final after finishing second behind Iraq.

Palestine will open their Asian Qualifiers Group D campaign against Uzbekistan at the Faisal Al-Husseini Stadium on September 5, before travelling to face Singapore five days later.

The group also features Saudi Arabia and Yemen, two West Asian rivals they are set to face on October 15 and November 14 respectively.

Goalkeepers: Toufic Ali, Rami Hamadi, Naim Abu Aker.

Defenders: Musa Farawi, Abdelatif Bahdari, Yaser Hamed Mayor, Abdallah Jaber, Ahmed Qatish, Mohammed Abu Mayala, Ahmed Zreiqi, Musa Saleem, Waleed Qombor.

Midfielders: Haitham Khairallah, Ahmed Abu Khadija, Mahmoud Abu Warda, Mohammed Rashid, Mohammed Darweesh, Shadi Shaban, Nazmi Albadawi, Tamer Seyam, Samer Maraaba, Islam Batran.

Forwards: Mahmoud Wadi, Khaled Salem, Saleh Chihadeh, Oday Dabbagh.
