Al Ain: Ghanaian striker Asamoah Gyan scored a winner in the 80th minute as UAE Pro League table-toppers and AFC Champions League 2013 contenders Al Ain defeated fellow ACL aspirants Al Jazira in an important domestic clash on Sunday.
The win put Al Ain six-point clear at the top of the table with 43 points from 17 matches. Al Jazira surrendered their second position to go third with 34 points.
The Sunday’s match was an inspiring reaction from the Cosmin Olaroiu side after they suffered a shocking home defeat at the hands of Dibba AL Fujairah in the domestic competition a week ago.
Gyan, who was in thick of action by scoring a goal against Al Hilal in the midweek continental adventure, was again the Messiah for the ACL 2013 Group D side as he took his penalty brilliantly to score a 81st minute winner. The former Sunderland hit man is the leading striker in the league with 22 goals.
It was second straight defeat for newly appointed Al Jazira coach Luis Milla whose side suffered a surprising 3-1 defeat at the hands of unknown Iranian debutants Tractrosazi on the match day one in the ACL 2013.
Milla’s Jazira will try to end their current poor run of form when they host Saudi champions Al Shabab on 12 March while Al Ain will travel to Tehran to face Esteghlal a day after.
