Guangzhou: Brazilian striker Muriqui enjoyed a triple celebration on Saturday night after being named the Abdullah Al Dabal MVP and AFC Champions League Top Goalscorer following Guangzhou Evergrande’s final success over Korea Republic’s FC Seoul.
Luiz Guilherme Da Conceicao Silva, who is more commonly known as Muriqui, was unable to add to his 13 goals in the final two games of the campaign but set-up the opening goal of the second leg for fellow Brazilian Elkeson as Guangzhou shared a 1-1 draw with FC Seoul to win the title on away goals following a 3-3 draw on aggregate.
The 27-year-old, who scored three goals in eight games as Guangzhou reached the quarter-finals on their debut appearance in the competition last year, finished a runaway winner at the top of the leading goalscorer list with team-mate Dario Conca second having contributed eight goals for Marcello Lippi’s side this season.
“This was a tough match because the competition is fierce and the opposition was tough,” said Muriqui following the final.
“In the last game in Korea we played out a 2-2 draw and that laid a solid foundation for us to come back to Guangzhou.
“We had an advantage playing the second leg here and we took advantage of that. We played with our own style and we won.”
Dejan Damjanovic’s equaliser in the second leg of the final saw the FC Seoul striker join El Jaish’s Wagner Ribeiro on seven goals for the campaign with the Montenegrin having scored five goals in his last six games in the AFC Champions League.
And with Elkeson maintaining his goal-a-game average in the AFC Champions League, the Brazilian joined Kashiwa Reysol’s Masato Kudo on six goals overall.
