Kuala Lumpur: AFC General Secretary Dato’ Alex Soosay congratulated Singapore's Lions XII for their victory in the Malaysian Super League but reiterated that they will not be able to compete in the AFC Cup as the regulations does not allow foreign teams to represent the country they are playing in.

“The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) is aware of the regulations. Last year also, the Lions XII were not eligible to participate in the AFC Cup and the FAM’s request to allow league’s third-placed team Selangor was accepted by the AFC Competitions Committee,” he said.

“The FAM will have to again send in a request to replace the league champions with the runners-up for AFC Cup and the AFC Competitions Committee will take a decision in this regard.”
