FARO, Portugal: The Chinese national team suffered a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach on Tuesday here.
All the goals against Zhu Guanghu’s men were posted in the opening half with Swedish midfielder David Degen opening the scoring on eight minutes. Degeb scored again in the 36th minute but not before Federico Insua had made it 2-0 in the 11th minute. Wesley Sonck scored the last goal five minutes before the break.
In contrast to the senior team’s woes, the Chinese Olympic team scored a 3-0 win over Ligue 3 side Arles in the French city of Arles. Jiang Chen fired China into the lead on 30 minutes off a free kick from Chen Tao before Zhu Ting doubled the advantage three minutes later. Jiang Chen scored China’s third goal from over 40 metres out with a long-range cracker in the last minute.
No wonder coach Ratomir Dujkovic was delighted with the win. “Everyone played well today and our forwards did a great job even though they didn’t score. The main purpose of this tour is to discover new players and in this particular match I tried to give all players an opportunity to play.”
The Olympic team’s next opponents will be Monaco FC, a Ligue 1 club, on January 17.
