Vientiane: AFC Challenge Cup 2014 qualifiers Laos were held to a 1-1 draw with Guam in an international friendly on Friday.
Thailand-based Soukaphone Vongchiengkham gave Laos the lead from the spot but the Krabi FC striker’s 15th minute opener was cancelled out in the second-half after Laos referee Phongsanit Xaypaseuth also awarded Guam a penalty.
Jason Cunliffe, scorer of a brace as Guam defeated Chinese Taipei 3-0 in the AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers, earned the Matao a share of the spoils with a second-half spot-kick after the midfielder, who plays his club football in the Philippines’ United Football League with Pachanga Diliman, was fouled during a corner.
Laos were using Friday’s friendly as part of their early preparations for next year’s AFC Challenge Cup in the Maldives, which they reached as the best of the second-placed team in the qualifying campaign.
The winners of the fifth edition of the tournament will also book their ticket to the 2015 AFC Asian Cup, joining 2012 AFC Challenge Cup champions DPR Korea in the draw for Asia’s premier competition
