| Al Nejmeh coach killed in road accident |
 |
| Nenad Stavric |
BEIRUT – Al Nejmeh coach Nenad Stavric has passed away at the age of 44 after being hit by car while on a visit to the Syrian capital Damascus.
The Serbian was no stranger to Asian football having coached clubs in Syria, Kuwait and Lebanon.
After being appointed Nejmeh coach in June 2007, Stavric became a popular figure at the Beirut club having guided them to the semi-finals of the 2007 AFC Cup where they narrowly lost to eventual winners Shabab Al Ordun.
Stavric made an even bigger impact during his five years with Syrian side Al Wahda, who he joined in March 2002.
After leading the Damascus-based outfit to the 2002/03 Syrian FA Cup, Stavric inspired Al Wahda to the 2003/04 league title, their first since the club’s foundation in 1972.
Al Wahda’s cup win the previous season enabled them take part in the 2004 AFC Cup where they reached the final and a two-leg clash with city-rivals Al Jaish.
After a 3-3 aggregate draw, they were unfortunate to lose to on away goals, as both legs were played at the same venue, the Al Abbassiyn Stadium.
A Syrian win in the AFC Cup coupled with the suspension of Bahrain meant that Al Wahda’s historic league win saw Stavric lead his side at the AFC Champions League in 2005 before he had a short stint with Al Arabi in Kuwait prior to his move to Lebanon.
The AFC extends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of the late Nenad Stavric.
