CHONGQING – Japan scored two late goals to come from 2-1 down and defeat tournament favourites DPR Korea 3-2 in the opening match of the 2008 East Asian Women’s Football Championship on Monday.

Ri Un-gyong extended DPR Korea’s lead ten minutes after the interval only for Aya Miyama to equalise in the 81st minute before Homare Sawa, Japan’s most capped women’s footballer and leading scorer, netted the winner three minutes into time added on.
Hosts China also had to come from 2-1 down as the Steel Roses showed their mettle with a similar 3-2 win over reigning champions Korea Republic.
Han Duan gave China the lead on the stroke of half-time but goals in the 59th and 66th minutes put the Koreans in the driving seat.
Han levelled the match with her second of the night in the 79th minute before Xu Yuan sealed the win with four minutes left to play.
