CHONGQING – Shinobu Ohno’s two first-half goals helped Japan cruise to a 3-0 victory over hosts China on Sunday to win the second edition of the East Asian Women’s Football Championship.
Ohno opened the scoring in the 19th minute before the 24-year-old NTV Beleza striker netted her second three minutes before the interval to give Japan a commanding lead over the reigning AFC Asian Women’s champions going into the second-half.
China’s hopes of getting back into the game were dealt a further blow when Ohno’s NTV Beleza team-mate Yuki Nagasato scored Japan’s third ten minutes after the break.
Japan also took home the Fair play award while all-time leading scorer Homare Sawa was named tournament MVP.
DPR Korea finished runners-up for the second time after scoring four times without reply in the second-half of their match with former champions Korea Republic.
Kim Yong-ae broke the deadlock eight minutes after the interval before Hong Myong-gum, who won the award for the tournament’s best defender, added a 68th minute second.
Barely 60 seconds later DPR Korea skipper and star striker Ri Kum-suk netted the third with Kim getting her second of the night to complete the resounding win over their southern neighbours.
