| AFC, Chelsea discuss plans to extend partnership to India |
KUALA LUMPUR: AFC President Mohamed Bin Hammam met Chelsea FC Chief Executive Officer Peter Kenyon at AFC House and discussed the extension of the English Premier League club’s support for AFC’s football development programme Vision Asia to India.
Chelsea FC signed a four-year partnership with AFC last year to become the confederation’s Official Football Development Partner in China and since then have helped in launching four city leagues.
Speaking at the outset, Bin Hammam said: “We appreciate Chelsea’s support and so do our Member Associations, clubs and football fans.”
“Chelsea had the courage and commitment to support our products in China and this partnership has been so successful that now we have been approached by so many Member Associations and clubs to replicate the model,” said the AFC chief.
Chelsea CEO Kenyon congratulated the AFC President on Vision China’s outstanding success.
“Three years back these were just plans but now these are full fledged leagues. It is remarkable that the leagues are in such a (good) position now,” said Kenyon. “AFC has the passion and commitment to make this happen and this is what spurred me into talking how we can extend our partnership to India too.”
“Our credentials are well known in the area of grassroots development and if we can find a way of working together in India as well, there is a real opportunity of making Vision India come true as partners.”
Chelsea has already held preliminary discussions with the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
