| Ashgabat (in white) will next face holders Shagadam in the Turkmenistan Cup. |
COLOMBO – Turkmenistan and Myanmar’s first representatives in the AFC President’s Cup will be looking to make their mark in the competition for ‘emerging nations’ when Ashgabat takes on Kanbawza in the Group C opener on Wednesday.
Ashgabat, who won the 2007 Turkmenistan league title just one year after their formation, face the men from Myanmar in the early match at the Sugathadasa Stadium before hosts Ratnam look to put the brakes on Transport United’s campaign at the same venue.
Ratnam reached the semi-finals of last year’s AFC President’s Cup, matching the mark set by Sri Lankan league rivals Blue Star in the inaugural tournament, while Bhutan’s Transport United have been ever-presents since the competition began in 2005.
Transport United, who have won just twice in the AFC President’s Cup, beating Pakistan Army in 2006 (1-0) and 2007 (3-2), then face Ashgabat on Friday before Kanbawza face the four-time Sri Lankan Premier League champions in the following fixture.
The action reaches its conclusion on Sunday as Transport United takes on Kanbawza and Ratnam squares off with Ashgabat with the top side in Group C joining AFC President’s Cup champions and Group B winners Dordoi Dynamo in September’s semi-finals, which will also feature the winners of Group A and the best runners-up in the group stage.
