| Ashgabat stunned, facile win for Ratnam |

COLOMBO: A late goal by Kyaw Thi Ha handed Kanbawza a dream debut in the AFC President’s Cup when the Myanmar side shocked Turkmenistan champions Ashgabat 1-0 in the Group C opener here at the Sugathadasa Stadium on Wednesday.
In another match of the day, Sri Lanka’s Ratnam Sports Club, who made it to the semifinals in the tournament’s last edition in Pakistan, thrashed Bhutan’s Transport United 7-1.
Rahim Kurbanmamedov’s side, who won their maiden Turkmenitsan league crown just one year after their formation last year, were considered favourites to win this group and qualify for the tournament proper but a 85th minute strike form forward Kyaw sealed the fate of the Central Asians.
Ediribandanage Channa, who had scored five goals in his team’s 6-1 defeat of the same opposition last year, was again the hero for the hosts scoring a hat-trick in the 17, 41 and 90th minutes.
Mohamed Asmeer (25), Chathura Weerasinghe (59), Kasun Jayasuriya (60) and Nadeeka Handi (79) were the other goalscorers for the hosts while Ugyen Wangchuk netted the consolation goal for the Bhutanese outfit.
Aye Maung-coached Kanbawza would be looking to continue their winning form when they face hosts and four-time Sri Lanka Premier League winners Ratnam on Friday while Ashgabat would aim to bring their campaign back on track against Transport United on the same day.
