| Ashgabat's better record against Kanbawza and Ratnam took them through to the semi-finals of the 2008 AFC President's Cup. |
COLOMBO – Turkmenistan champions Ashgabat advanced to the semi-finals of the 2008 AFC President’s Cup after their 2-0 win over Group C hosts Ratnam Sports Club on Sunday.
Both goals came in the first-half with forward Gahrymanberdi Chonkayev opening the scoring in the 39th minute before his strike partner Arslanmurad Amanov doubled Ashgabat’s advantage on the stroke of half-time.
Neither side could add to the score line after the interval but they were both reduced to ten men late in the match with Ratnam midfielder Mohamed Asmeer picking up his second yellow card in the 82nd minute, five minutes before numerical parity was restored following the second booking for Ashgabat’s Rustam Saparov.
Despite having an inferior goal difference to Kanbawza, who also have six points following their 11-0 win over Transport United, the Turkmenistan champions join title holders and Group B winners Dordoi Dynamo in the final four on account of their better overall record against Kanbawza and Ratnam, with the matches against Transport United not taken into account.
