GUANGZHOU: A brace by Ivory Coast striker Guillaume Dah Zadi failed to prevent AFC Champions League Group E hopefuls Changchun Yatai from falling to a 3-2 defeat to hosts Guangzhou Yiyao in the Chinese Super League on Saturday.
The defeat – Changchun ’s second in a row - comes at a most inopportune time for the Chinese champions as they prepare to tackle Vietnamese side Binh Duong in a crucial AFC Champions League game on Wednesday with the result having a big bearing on their chances of qualification for the knock-out stage.
Changchun were pegged back in the 36th minute when Xu Liang hit the opener for the hosts before Brazilian import Tiago made it 2-0 a minute before the break. Dah Zadi pulled one back in the 70th minute for Gao Hongbo’s side but Jose Filho restored Guangzhou’s two-goal lead five minutes later.
Dah Zadi further reduced the deficit in the 90th minute for the visitors but it proved to be too little, too little.
Changchun now rest above the bottom two teams in the 16-team ladder with just four points from five outings.
