AMMAN: Asian champions Iraq started preparations for their crucial 2010 FIFA World Cup match against Australia on June 1 with a six-day training camp here on Saturday.
Coach Adnan Hamad has called up 23 players for the training camp but only 15 turned up on the first day due to club commitments.
Hamd did not include out-of-form AFC Asian Cup winning defenders Jasem Al Hamd and Bassim Abbas while Karrar Jassim did not find a place as he has been suspended against Australia after collecting two cautions in the previous games.
Notable absentees in the camp include AFC Asian Cup winning captain Younis Mahmoud and Nashat Akram, who strut their stuff for Qatar’s Al Gharafa who are scheduled to clash with Umm Salal in the Qatar Emir’s Cup final on May 16.
"The training camp will last for six days after that Iraq will play a friendly against Syria in Damascus on May 17," Iraq Football Association President Hussein Saeed said.
With just one point in the bag and an unflattering last position in the group, the Asian champions can ill-afford a negative result on June 1 at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane against the Socceroos who are currently setting the pace with four points, one more than Qatar while China are third with two points.
"We hope that the camp will help, even though not all the players could join due to club commitments, to put the team in the right mindset to face Australia," added Saeed.
Iraq’s programme also includes a friendly match against Thailand on May 25 in Bangkok before the Lions of Mesopotamia travel to Brisbane on May 27.
THE SQUAD: Nour Sabri, Muhammed Kassid, Ahmed Ali, Wisam Kassid, Yasser Raad, Jasim Swadi, Ali Salah, Ali Hussein Rhaima, Haider Abdul Ameer, Salam Shaker, Muhammed Ali Kareem, Saad Atiah, Nashaat Akram, Haitham Kadhum, Khaled Basheer, Qusay Munir, Younes Mahmoud, Emad Muhammed, Alaa Abdul Zahra, Mustafa Kareem, Ali Salah, Samer Saeed, Hawar Mulla Muhammed, Saleh Sudair, Nabeel Abbas and Mahdi Kareem.
