DAMASCUS: Ziad Chabo had a penalty saved but persevered to score two goals in Syria’s 2-1 win over Oman in a friendly international here in the Syrian capital on Saturday.
The West Asians are preparing for a busy month of June when 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying takes centre-stage in the continent.
The Mohamed Kwid-led hosts fell behind to an own goal by defender Arafat Mohamed in the 10th minute and their confidence continued to be brittle when Omani goalkeeper Badr Juma blocked a spot-kick from Chabo, who plies his trade for league champions Al Karama, in the 52nd minute.
The Syrian hitman, however, was not to be denied in the 54th minute and leveled the scores before striking again in the 73rd minute for the winner.
Oman, coached by Uruguayan Julio Cesar Ribas, continue their preparation with another friendly against Turkmenistan at home on May 18 while Syria clash with Asian champions Iraq a day earlier.
