| Head сoach Jose Maria Parzos Mandez still has concerns with Thailand's attack even though they fired 11 past Indonesia |
BANGKOK - Coach Jose Maria Parzos Mendez pulled no punches after seeing Thailand waste a host of chances in the 1-0 Group A victory over Iraq at Nimibutr Stadium.
Panuwa Janta scored the only goal of the game with a fierce left-foot strike that left keeper Utaly Abdulqader a mere spectator.
The Iraq custodian otherwise kept the hosts at bay with an inspired performance that featured a string of fine saves but his compatriots were unable to find an equaliser at the other end.
However, while Mendez highlighted the role Abdulqader played, he was more disappointed with his side's inability to kill off the encounter.
"I'm happy with the result yes but not with the game," he said. “We will not go far if we play like that. We didn't play well today and missed a lot of chances. You cannot do this. The Iraq keeper did very well but we have to cut out the nervous finishing.
"It's true that you cannot always play well but you need to take your chances.
"When you play a team like Iraq, you need to play fast and we played too slow. It helped their defence. It was a difficult game and it was not good going into the final minutes with just a one-goal advantage.
"We did not show anything. The first game is always difficult and I only hope we have all the nerves out of the way and we start to play and forget today. The one positive is the victory."
Iraq coach Asaad Al-Hamdani, by contrast, was delighted with his side's effort and also paid tribute to Abdulqader.
"The result was expected due to the gap between Iraq and Thailand. They are more experienced than us and we played well. I knows that we have the best goalkeeper in Asia according to what I have seen. It is not the first he has played well and I am very proud of him."
