| San Martin double helps Kadah advance |
 |
| Kedah won 2-0 against Home United to avenge their 5-1 defeat and qualify for the quarter-finals. |
ALOR STAR – Chilean midfielder Nelson San Martin scored twice to help Kedah to a 4-1 win over Home United as the Malaysian champions secured their place in the quarter-finals of the AFC Cup on Wednesday night.
Cameroonian striker Kengne Ludovick opened the scoring for the visitors at the Stadium Darulaman but Kedah fought back and San Martin levelled just before the break.
Mat Sabri Abu put the hosts ahead at the start of the second half before further goals by San Martin and Marlon James secured the three points that ensured Kedah’s progress from Group D.
Home United had already qualified for the quarter-finals after winning all five games prior to their visit to Alor Star and the Singapore side looked like continuing their winning streak when skipper Indra Sahdan fed a pass to Ludovick, who rounded a defender before putting the ball into the Kedah net after only five minutes.
Buoyed by the goal Home United defended in numbers and rarely allowed Kedah to go forward, although the hosts had the lion's share of the possession in the first half-hour.
But San Martin snatched a goal in the 41st to ensure the two sides went into the break level when he delivered a superb free-kick from the left into the back of the net.
Kedah then went ahead less than a minute after the break when James' long ball was picked up by the nippy Mat Sabri Abu, who wasted no time in drilling his effort into the Home goal.
And Home United fell further behind in the 62nd minute when they conceded a penalty after a defender brought down Badrol Bakhtiar inside the penalty box. San Martin stepped up and made no mistake from the spot to give Kedah a two-goal advantage.
James then sealed the win with seven minutes remaining, bursting through the Singaporean side's defence before blasting home.
