| AFC chief offers sympathy to China |

KUALA LUMPUR: AFC President Mohamed Bin Hammam has expressed his deep sorrow for the victims of the China earthquake disaster and extended his heart-felt condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims.
In a letter sent to Ge Honglin, the Mayor of Chengdu , the capital of the worst-hit Sichuan province, Bin Hammam said; “I am deeply saddened by the news of the casualties and losses coming from Sichuan Province. Please accept my most sincere condolences on your country’s great loss.”
The AFC chief was in Chengdu on May 12 with a 23-member Vision Asia delegation when the quake struck, forcing him and the others to evacuate to the safety of the adjoining Chengdu Football Stadium.
Officials from the Chengdu local government, the Chinese Football Association and Chengdu District Football Association helped the AFC delegation shift to a football training centre where they spent the night, before getting special permission to fly out to Kuala Lumpur via Hanoi the next day.
Expressing his gratitude to the Mayor, Bin Hammam said: “We were able to return home safely because of your efforts. On behalf of all my guests and staff members, I wish to thank you and all who have helped us during the difficult times.”
The AFC delegation which had a miraculous escape included CONCACAF President Jack Warner, Oman Football Association President Sayyid Khalid Hamed Al Busaidi, President of the Philippines Football Federation Jose Mari C Martinez, Vietnam Football Federation President Nguyen Trong Hy, Kyrgyzstan Football Federation President Amangeldi Muraliev, Vice-President of the Uzbekistan Football Federation Bakhtier Rakhimov and FIFA Technical Director Jean-Michel Benezet.
Present with the AFC team throughout the entire period were CFA General Secretary Xie Yalong and Chengdu Football Association General Secretary Gu Jiang Ming.
