| S2S workshop held |
 |
| S2S workshop in progress in the Iranian capital. |
TEHRAN – A two-day workshop on Secret to Sports, an online coaching tool, was held for aspiring coaches and head coaches of participating teams in the AFC U-14 Festival of Football for South Asia region here recently.
On the first day, 25 young coaches and 7 head coaches familiarised themselves with the advantages of the internet in both improving the understanding of their players and keeping touch with counterparts in other countries.
AFC Grassroots Development Officer Dr Shamil Kamil said: “They (the coaches) are here to update their knowledge and familiarise themselves with modern issues.”
The coaches were shown how online learning can improve their players individually as well as their teams’ training.
Habib Bakhshi, a young coach from Afghanistan who formerly played for the national team, said: “I don’t have much of an opportunity to use the internet and my English isn’t very good. At this festival, we’ve learned a lot about tactics and technique but I know that the internet is also important in increasing our knowledge.”
Tor O. Ahlgren, from online teaching company S2S, led the workshop and said that the most important thing about online learning is that the coaches find out about today’s key issues.
“This (online learning) is an industry which supports coaching. It alerts coaches to new issues and the speed of the internet means that coaches must use it to be up-to-date and to bring their players up to date.”
Difficulty with speaking English meant that most of the coaches attending the workshop found it to be challenging.
But AFC Grassroots and Youth Department’s Acting Director John Whittle thinks they must improve their English. “Football coaches from grassroots to professional levels can use online learning. This will have an increasing impact upon improving coaches’ knowledge, resulting in more Asian coaches in Asia.
“All coaches must be familiar with English so that they can make the most of this facility.”
Whittle and Dr Kamil closed the two-day workshop with a session focussing on the importance of grassroots football in the development of a country’s clubs and national team.
