MUSCAT – Hamed Al Azani, who led Al Nahda to the quarter-finals of this year’s AFC Cup, has replaced Julio Cesar Ribas at the helm of Oman following their 3-0 World Cup qualifying defeat to Japan.
The Oman Football Association (OFA) met on Wednesday in the wake of the defeat in Yokohama that left Oman second last in Group 2, three points behind Japan and six adrift of leaders and Gulf rivals Bahrain with three rounds left to play.
"We have decided to part with Ribas and his team in the larger interests of the national team following the disappointing performance of the team on Monday in Japan," OFA General Secretary Taha Al Kishry told the Oman Observer.
Al Azani, who also took temporary charge of Oman in the wake of Srecko Juricic’s dismissal in 2006, will lead the side for their remaining three World Cup qualifiers before returning to Al Nahda to focus on the Muscat club’s AFC Cup quarter-final clash with Singapore Armed Forces.
