MUSCAT – Oman coach Hamad Al Azzani was pleased with his side’s determined fight back on Sunday as they came from a goal down to beat Thailand 2-1 in their final game of the World Cup qualifiers.
Tawan Sripan gave the visitors the lead in the Group Two tie with an early penalty but Imad Al Hosni’s second-half brace ensured that Oman finished their disappointing qualifying campaign on a positive note.
"We had a good game tonight as we managed to come back from a goal down to score two goals and get a win," said Al Azzani.
"We are disappointed that we couldn't reach the next stage but at the end of the day this is football and we are satisfied with the performance of the players in the last three games.
"The players played well and we managed to fix the mistakes that we made in the first half.
“Those mistakes affected our team but we got back into the game in the second half and won despite missing a lot of chances."
Despite leading Oman to an unbeaten record in their last three games since taking charge after the sacking of Uruguayan coach Julio Ribas earlier this month, Al Azzani is uncertain whether he will be allowed to continue in the position.
"I've given all that I could after taking the job and it will be a good opportunity for me if I continued with the team,” he said.
“I'm always available to help the national team and hopefully the future will be better for us."
Chanvit Phalajivin, who intended to step down as Thailand coach after the match, was unavailable for comment after skipping the post-match press conference.
