SINGAPORE – AFC Cup 2008 quarter-finalists Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) took charge of the 2008 S.League with an emphatic 7-0 hammering of Dalian Shide Siwu.
The victory, SAF’s 12th in 15 matches, took them top of the standings on goal difference ahead of the season’s surprise package Korean Super Reds, who will regain pole position if they can avoid defeat at Gombak United on Tuesday.
Jamal Ali got the ball rolling with just eight minutes of the match at the Choa Chu Kang Stadium gone, heading home a thrice-taken Therdsak Chaiman corner before the former Thai international slotted the ball through a crowded penalty area to score SAF’s second just two minutes later.
Japanese striker Norikazu Murakami netted the third in the 19th minute before Daniel Bennett headed home Therdsak’s 26th minute free-kick for his first of the season.
SAF went 5-0 up courtesy of a fine Murakami header just after the half-hour mark before the former Albirex Niigata striker completed his hat-trick in the 65th minute after Aleksander Duric’s shot was blocked by a defender.
The Singapore international, last season’s top scorer with an incredible 43 goals in 33 game for the S-League champions, was having an unlucky time in front of the Dalian net, missing five good opportunities to get his name on the score sheet.
But with four minutes left to play some poor defending from Dalian allowed the evergreen 37-year-old the opportunity to knock the ball into an unguarded net to round off the comprehensive win.
