DAMASCUS: AFC Champions League quarter-finalists Al Karama stayed on track for a grand double after entering the semi-finals of the Syria Cup on Sunday with a 4-2 win on penalties against Al Jaish after a 1-1 aggregate deadlock.
Al Karama, who won the league earlier and are aiming to repeat their grand success of last season when they swept the two most important domestic titles on offer, had a 1-0 lead from the first leg but Majed Al Haj pulled Al Jaish level with his 78th minute goal.
In the ensuing shootout, Jehad Al Hussein, Hassan Abbas, Tawfeeq Tayara and Mosab Balhous found the target for the 2006 AFC Champions League runners-up while only Ahmed Azzam and Eyad Al Helo could bulge the net for Al Jaish, who won the AFC Cup in 2004.
The win pitted Mohamed Kwid’s men against Al Majd in the semi-finals which takes place over two legs on July 15 and July 18. The other last four encounter will feature Al Ittihad and Hottain.
The final is scheduled for July 22.
