RIYADH: Former Argentine goalkeeper Neri Pompidou has taken over the reins of Saudi giants Al Shabab from compatriot Enzo Trossero who quit recently due to personal reasons.
Pompidou signed the deal last week and arrived in the Saudi capital on Saturday.
The Argentine will get a good look at his charges when they start training from July 21 before moving to Tunisia for a three-week camp from August 6 to prepare for next season’s rigours.
“Al Shabab are one of the best teams in Asia and the Gulf,” said Pompidou. “I now know a lot about the club after asking former Argentinian coaches in Saudi including Enzo and some former players in Saudi.”
Al Shabab, who have won the league title five times since 1991, finished third last season behind champions Al Hilal and second placed Al Ittihad.
