| Xian FC Goal Scorer Wang Peng Celebrates His Goal in CSL 14th Round against Chengdu Blades FC |
XI’AN – Shaanxi Baorong edged Chengdu Blades 1-0 to go top of the table as the 2008 Chinese Super League (CSL) takes a six-week hiatus for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
Former Dalian Shide striker Wang Peng capitalised on a mix-up in the Chengdu defence to scramble the ball home in the 57th minute and give Shaanxi their fourth successive win.
The victory took Shaanxi’s points tally to 30, two ahead of 2006 league and cup winners Shandong Luneng, who held top spot for 24 hours following their 2-0 defeat over Wuhan Guanggu a day earlier.
Shanghai Shenhua are in third thanks to their 3-1 win over fallen giants Dalian Shide while AFC Champions League 2008 qualifiers Beijing Guoan are fourth following their 1-1 draw with Changsa Ginde.
Henan Jianye occupy fifth following a 2-0 win over Guangzhou with Tianjin Teda dropping to sixth after losing 2-1 at defending champions Changchun Yatai, who will struggle to keep hold of their CSL crown unless they can quickly improve on their tenth position when the league resumes after the brief Olympic hiatus.
Qu Bo, who had a brief stint in the English Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur, struck twice as Qingdao Jonoon came from a goal behind to defeat bottom-of-the-table Liaoning 2-1 while Shenzhen Shangqingyin went down to Antonio’s tenth minute effort in their clash with Zheijiang Lucheng in the weekend’s remaining fixture
