DOHA – Legendary Brazilian goalkeeper Émerson Leão has agreed to coach Qatar giants Al Sadd, replacing Hassan Harmatullah at the helm of the 11-time national champions.
The 59-year-old, who has over a hundred international caps for his country, joins Al Sadd from Brazilian side Santos and marks his return to Asian club football after coaching J.League outfit Vissel Kobe for just four matches in 2005.
Leão’s short stint with Vissel was the third time he coached in Japan having had spells with Shimizu S-Pulse from 1992 to 1994 and with Verdy Kawasaki, who he guided to glory in the 1996 Emperor’s Cup, the club’s last major success before a downturn in fortunes that ultimately led a move to Chofu and a change of name to Tokyo Verdy 1969.
The one-year-deal with Al Sadd, however, is his first time coaching in the Middle East but says he is looking forward to the challenge of working with Qatar’s most successful club side.
“I heard a lot about Qatari football and Al Sadd club who boast numerous quality players,” the former Brazil national team boss told Al Sadd’s official website.
“I also heard about the Qatar professional league and the constant development of football in the country in general.
“It’s a big challenge for me and I know very well that Al Sadd is a club of trophies.”
