DAMASCUS: Syria League champions Al Karama earned two crucial away goals in their 2-2 draw with Al Majd in the first leg of their Syria Cup semi-finals on Tuesday.
A goalless or 1-1 draw in the second leg next Friday would be enough for the AFC Champions League quarter-finalists to book their berth in the final as they aim for a double like last season.
Raja Rafaee gave league runners-up Al Majd the lead in the fifth minute and Mohammad Al Zeno made it 2-0 in the 19th minute.
Mohamed Kwid’s charges, who will host Japan’s Gamba Osaka in the first leg of their AFC Champions League quarter-finals on September 17, fought back to level the scores, thanks to Fahed Oudeh (47) and Ziad Chabo (50) strikes.
Al Ittihad, who finished third in the league, defeated Hottain 2-1 in another semi-final. Mohammad Faras opened the scoring for Hottain in the 58th minute but Jesus Gomez leveled the scores for Al Ittihad from the spot two minutes later. Abdu-Fattah Al Ahga scored the match-winner for Ittihad in the 75th minute.
