BEIJING: Hosts China announced their final squad for the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament on Wednesday with four players each from Chinese Super League sides Shanghai Shenhua and Shandong Luneng dominating Ratomir Dujkovic’s side.
At hand for the Serbian coach as the hosts battle their way through a group comprising Brazil, New Zealand and Belgium would be Shenhua’s Qiu Shengjiong, Li Weifeng, Shen Longyuan and Gao Lin while the Shandong complement includes Zhou Haibin, Yuan Weiwei, Cui Peng and Han Peng.
Manchester United’s highly rated forward Dong Fangzhou also finds a place in the squad though Dalian Shide’s inspirational midfielder Zhao Xuri has been kept in the reserves.
Charlton Athletic playmaker Zheng Zhi will captain the side and flanked by Li and Han forms the trio of overaged players selected by Dujkovic who - undeterred by China’s elimination in the third round of the FIFA World Cup Asian qualifiers - has vowed to steer the hosts to the last four of the Games.
Dujkovic has the choice of three strikers from among Dong, Gao and Han while the crucial task of protecting the goal could go to either Qiu or Liaoning FC custodian Zhang Lu.
China scored an easy 4-0 win over Malaysia in a friendly warm-up on Sunday.
