| AFC warns Maldives FA |
KUALA LUMPUR: AFC has issued a strong warning to the Maldives Football Association that it would not hesitate to instruct FIFA to cancel the elections on July 20 if media reports of unethical means employed by the candidates proved to be true.
The Maldives FA, which is under the administration of a Transitory Committee, ratified its statutes last month to set the stage for elections this Sunday.
“AFC and FIFA representatives will oversee the elections of the new management but if there is evidence of unethical and unfair means, we will cancel it,” said AFC President Mohamed Bin Hammam.
“AFC supports free and fair democratic polls in all its Member Associations and there will be zero tolerance for any interference or corrupt practices in this process.”
“The Maldives FA have taken the first step by ratifying their statutes and election of office-bearers in a fully transparent manner should be the logical outcome,” added the AFC chief.
