| IFA tenure extended by one year |
KUALA LUMPUR: FIFA has approved an extension by one year to the tenure of the Iraq Football Association (IFA)’s current management.
As a result of the lack of security in Iraq, it has not been possible to organise an IFA General Assembly to ratify its statutes in accordance with FIFA’s plans to modernise structures in its Member Associations worldwide, nor to hold statutory elections set for June 2008.
Iraqi sport on the whole has suffered from attempts by the sports minister to interfere in its running, as a result of which the IFA was suspended in May by FIFA and the IOC also banned Iraqi athletes in early June from competing in the Olympic Games in Beijing.
Despite the difficult situation for the IFA, there have been no interruptions to the Iraqi League Championship and, noting this, FIFA has granted the extension.
The new timeline sets the end of 2008 as a likely date for amending the IFA’s statutes and preparation of elections in early 2009, provided there is an improvement in the local situation.
Hussein Saeed is the President of the IFA and Iraq are the Asian champions.
TIMELINE FOR RATIFICIATION OF STATUTUES AND ELECTIONS
- Finalisation of the project to amend the IFA’s statutes in order that they be adopted between now and the end of 2008;
- Monitoring or regional clubs and associations with the aim of organising local elections before the national election;
- Preparation of the elections in early 2009, assuming there is an improvement in the local situation;
- Continuation of our cooperation with the IOC to clarify relations between the local sporting movement and the government authorities
