QINGHUANGDAO: Olympic hosts and Asian runners-up China thrashed New Zealand 3-1 in a women’s friendly tune-up on Wednesday night with goals from captain Li Jie, Lou Jiahui and Zhang Na.
A fifth minute corner, China’s first of the game, saw Li converting with ease to put the hosts ahead before striker Lou broke free to meet a right wing cross and slam it into the net eight minutes later.
Ali Riley then scored what proved to be New Zealand’s first goal against the Chinese in eight matches since a 1-3 defeat in 1997 to make it 2-1 but Shang Ruihua’s charges clinched the win when Zhang surged ahead to score in the 90th minute.
2006 AFC Women’s and Youth Player of the Year Ma Xiaoxu, who joined the national team earlier this month, played for the last 30 minutes but failed to make an impression on the proceedings.
The two teams had a mock shoot-out session after the game which the New Zealanders had the consolation of winning 5-3.
The Chinese women have been drawn with Sweden, Argentina and Canada for the August 6-21 Women's Olympic Football Tournament.
