DAMASCUS: Syria coach Mohamed Kwid resigned from his position on Thursday following a report which held him responsible for the team’s debacle in the third round of 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Syria narrowly missed out on a place in the fourth and final round of the qualifiers despite a 3-1 away victory over United Arab Emirates on the final Match Day. The Syrians needed to win by a three-goal margin to leapfrog UAE into second place.
The report of a three-member committee, which was formed by the Syria Football Association to probe the reasons behind the debacle, was published by a local daily prompting Kwid to put in his papers.
Kwid, who shot into the limelight after guiding Al Karama to the AFC Champions League final in 2006, took over from Fajr Ibrahim three months back after the Syrians eked out draws in the first two games of the qualifiers.
The Syrian will continue to guide Homs-based Al Karama who will host Japan’s Gamba Osaka in the first leg of their AFC Champions League quarter-finals on September 17.
